FAQs

Dumb question, considering I worked for Flat, but why "Flat"? That page seemed to be missing from my employee handbook...
It's a long, stupid story. Looking at it now we're glad we have a simple, memorable and flexible name.

How come you guys always seem so happy and seem to be rolling in the dough?
Money loves company. We figure if we appear happy and wealthy then people will flock to us and feel good paying us.

What exactly is it that you guys do??
We help clients express themselves and make interactive systems work.

I know, but what do you folks specialize in??? Really????
Flat doesn't specialize in any particular medium or market niche, we're a design studio with a broad range of knowledge and skills. In contemporary jargon you could say we develop brands. More accurately, however, Flat operates within a classic studio model. Like the Eames Studio without the infidelity and resentment (to the best of our knowledge).

Our specialization has more to do with the type of client we work well with. Our happiest relationships are with: Entrepreneurs who bring us into their inner circle so we may assist with all aspects of their business; Growing organizations branching out into uncharted waters who allow us to help define their strategy; Mature organizations that value design.

Is it fun?
It's work. Sometimes the work happens to be fun. Sometimes what the work affords is fun. We look for projects that are 'challenging' rather than 'fun'.

Isn't Cybil pretty?
Cybil DiCarlo is the only cat thanked in the FischerSpooner liner notes, therefore she must be gorgeous.

Do I look fat in this outfit?
Yes. Is that wrong?

How can I get "online"?
You're already online.

Who is the bad cop at FLAT?
Doug is bad. Petter is bad. Tsia is bad.

Can I come work for you?
Yes, Nate, you can.

Do you find owning your own business rewarding?
See illustration (by Tsia, published in 10x10 Magazine).

Is round funny?
This is the Zen koan of FAQs.

Can I come in for an interview? Can I drop off my portfolio? Can I stop by if I am in the neighborhood? Should I send you my resume every 3 mos with a generic cover letter?
Basically, the answer is NO to all these questions. The best way to get us to look at your work and give you a job is as follows: look at our work, write a thoughtful cover letter with a link to your URL, and email it to jobs@flat.com. We look at all the stuff that comes to this address. All other ways are inconsiderate and a bit like stalking.

If I ask you a question will you answer me?
Maybe. Email your questions to info@flat.com.
